Myths and Facts about Hearing Loss
Myth: “My hearing loss is normal for my age.”
Fact: Hearing loss, whether mild or profound, is a problem regardless of your age. Hearing loss is more prevalent as you get older, but untreated hearing loss can interfere with almost every part of your life. Untreated hearing loss is linked to depression, social isolation, and increased risk of falls in older adults.
Myth: “Only old people wear hearing aids.”
Fact: While hearing loss is more prevalent in the aging population, it can happen at any time and at any age. Approximately 1 in 500 infants are born with or develop hearing loss in early childhood. More than 5.1 million children and teens (6-19 years) have some degree of hearing loss.
Myth: “I don’t like the way hearing aids look.”
Fact: Today’s hearing aids and implantable devices are much smaller than the devices of the past. Many styles are nearly invisible on the ear. With the rise of personal listening devices such as headphones and earbuds, many hearing aids blend in.
Myth: “Hearing aids are difficult to use.”
Fact: There is a learning curve to using hearing aids as you adjust to hearing new sounds and using a new device. Your brain needs time to adjust. We help you during the adaptation process by providing follow up care during your trial period to ensure the devices are the right fit for you.
