Cochlear Implants

Our experienced team provides comprehensive cochlear implant services, including candidacy evaluation and mapping. You may be a candidate for a cochlear implant if you:

  • Have moderate to profound hearing loss
  • Have difficulty hearing and understanding speech, even with properly fit hearing aids
  • Are motivated to improve your hearing and participate in follow-up care

The Cochlear Implant Process

Evaluation

You will first need to undergo further testing to determine if you are a candidate for a cochlear implant. We will assess your case history, current hearing devices, and perform testing with hearing aids.

Medical Assessment

If you are a candidate for cochlear implantation, you will need to be evaluated by an otologist (physician and surgeon specialized in the ear). The otologist will determine whether you are medically a candidate for the surgery. You may need imaging (CT or MRI) to check the inner ear structure.

Surgery

Cochlear implant surgery is typically an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. Most people return home the same day with limited downtime required. Your surgeon will discuss the procedure with you in more detail.

Activation

About 3-4 weeks after surgery, you will return for “Activation Day.” This is a big day! We will turn on the implant and program it. The goals for this appointment are 1) the device turns on and 2) the volume is comfortable. The goal is NOT to have perfect sound quality and understanding. You may hear just beeps, or hear some robotic speech, but it takes time for your brain to learn how to hear in this new way.

Ongoing Rehabilitation

You will continue to undergo routine programming of your device, otherwise known as “mapping.” Routine mapping is especially important in your first year with the cochlear implant, as your brain is rapidly adapting to changes in your hearing. We will provide you with resources and training exercises to help you hear your best.
