Do I Need a Hearing Test? Warning Signs Adults Shouldn’t Ignore

Hearing loss is the third most common medical condition in the United States, twice as prevalent as diabetes or cancer. More than 50 million Americans have some degree of hearing loss.

Hearing loss is often gradual, making it easy to miss or ignore. Even a mild hearing loss can negatively impact your daily life. If you answer yes to any of the following questions, it is time for a hearing test:

  1. Do you have difficulty understanding speech, especially in a noisy setting (i.e. – restaurant)?
  2. Do you think people are mumbling?
  3. Do you frequently ask others to repeat themselves?
  4. Do your family and friends think you have hearing difficulties?
  5. Are you turning up the volume on the TV, radio, or phone?
  6. Are you withdrawing from social events or conversations?

Why Early Testing Matters?

Untreated hearing loss is linked to depression, social isolation, and increased risk of falls in older adults. Research shows that addressing hearing loss early may reduce listening effort and help preserve quality of life.

When Should Adults Get Tested?

Annual testing helps catch changes early. If you’re unsure whether you need a hearing test, scheduling an evaluation is the best way to get clear answers and peace of mind.
