Cochlear Implant Services
Cochlear implants are surgically implanted devices that bypass the damaged hair cells in the inner ear, stimulating the hearing nerve directly through small electrical pulses. This device is recommended when hearing aids are no longer beneficial to someone with hearing loss.
Further evaluation is necessary to determine if a cochlear implant is an appropriate solution for you. In addition to the standard hearing evaluation, further testing includes:
Aided Sound-field Thresholds
You will listen to tones at different volumes and pitches while wearing hearing aids that have been programmed to your ears. This determines how well you can detect a sound with hearing aids.
Aided Speech Understanding
You will repeat words and phrases in quiet and in background noise while wearing hearing aids that have been programmed to your ears. We will test each ear individually and together. This will determine how well you understand speech with hearing aids.
Results
Depending on the results of this testing, you may or may not be a candidate for a cochlear implant. Potential recommendations may be a bimodal solution (cochlear implant on worse ear + hearing aid on better ear) or stronger traditional hearing aids. The audiologist will explain your results to you to ensure that you are educated about all possible options.
